Bristol Athletic Close the Gap with Huge Away Win!

Bristol Athletic produced a huge statement away from home with a hard-fought 4โ€“2 victory over league leaders Eighty One United at Hursley Lane, Publow, in the Bristol Suburban League Division 4. In a top-of-the-table clash, the win moves Athletic to within three points of Eighty One United with a game in hand and firmly in the title conversation.

The opening exchanges were even, with both sides creating half-chances in a physical first half. Maleke Brown came close early on, crashing a long-range effort against the bar as Athletic showed early intent. Eighty One Unitedโ€™s physical approach meant Athletic had to match them, and the game quickly became a battle.
Against the run of play, the hosts took the lead in the 17th minute after a mis-kick from Chev Miller allowed their striker through down the left, who chipped Adam Naili. Naili was superb all afternoon while covering in goal, and this was one of the few moments he was beaten.
Athletic responded immediately, regaining control and applying pressure. That pressure paid off on 26 minutes when Joe Whiteโ€”somehow finding himself in the box from left-backโ€”was wiped out from behind, earning a penalty. Shah Bhakerd, who had missed from the spot in the reverse fixture, stepped up with confidence and calmly converted to level the scores.
Momentum swung firmly Athleticโ€™s way, and on 40 minutes Emz Hunterโ€™s excellent hold-up play created space to slip Brown through, who rounded the keeper with great composure to give the visitors a deserved 2โ€“1 lead at the break.
The second half became a test of character on a difficult pitch. After some slick link-up play between Raph Waugh and player-manager Kanwar Singh, Waugh slid Kanwar through on the right. Singh cleverly positioned himself between man and ball to win another penalty, which Shah dispatched confidently on 67 minutes.
Waugh continued to cause problems and on 74 minutes burst down the right before delivering a low cross for Hunter to tap home and make it 4โ€“1.

Eighty One United applied late pressure and were awarded a highly questionable goal on 85 minutes, with the ball appearing to strike the post and bounce along the line before being given. The referee, who struggled for control throughout with several questionable decisions for both sides, allowed tensions to rise, and the game nearly boiled over late on. Despite attempts to draw Athletic into losing their composure, the visitors stayed focused and saw the game out professionally.

All players battled superbly, but special mention goes to Kelvin Williams, outstanding at centre-back while covering from his usual midfield role, earning Man of the Match, and Adam Naili, who made a string of crucial close-range saves to protect Athleticโ€™s lead.
A massive win, full of character, composure, and belief.
