Bristol Athletic Go Top After Five-Star Home Win

Bristol Athletic produced another statement performance on Home turf at Netham Park Pavilion, overcoming fellow title challengers Shaftesbury Crusade A, 5โ€“2, in a fiery top-of-the-table clash to move top of the Bristol Suburban League Division 4 on goal difference.

The opening stages were tight and scrappy, with both sides battling for territory and struggling to settle into any real rhythm. Athletic struck first, however, as debutant Makinde Kondwani, who put in a solid all-round performance, played a measured pass forward. A mis-kick from the Shaftsbury goalkeeper allowed Raphael Waugh to pounce, calmly rolling the ball into an empty net to give the hosts the lead.

That goal failed to bring control, though, and a lack of game managementโ€”combined with a referee who arrived late, struggled to control proceedings, and made several questionable decisionsโ€”saw momentum swing away from Athletic. Shaftesbury applied pressure and capitalised, turning the game on its head to go 2โ€“1 up within ten minutes.

Athletic briefly lost their way, but a reminder from the sidelines to stay focused and stick to the game plan proved vital. The response was immediate, with Athletic pushing higher up the pitch, winning second balls, and forcing a series of tight offside calls. Just before the break, a loose ball was seized upon by Kelvin Williams, who stepped out from the back and unleashed a thunderous long-range strike straight down the middle of the goal. The power left the goalkeeper helpless and brought Athletic level at 2โ€“2 heading into half-time.

The second half began with changes, as Oskar Malisev replaced Maleke Brown, but within minutes Malisev and Williams were involved in a heavy head collision. Malisev was forced off to receive treatment before later returning. Brown re-entered the action and made an instant impact, threading a perfectly weighted through ball into Shah Bhakerd, who beat his defender and coolly slotted a left-footed effort past the keeper to restore Athleticโ€™s lead at 3โ€“2.

With confidence flowing, Athletic began to dominate possession and dictate tempo. The fourth goal arrived when Raphael Waugh, a constant threat all afternoon, delivered from the left into the box. Bhakerd, showing his quality and composure, controlled expertly before smashing the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
The contest was put beyond doubt when substitute Emile Hunter clipped a superb ball over the top for Waugh, who showed great awareness to square for Malisev, returning for a second time, to tap home and complete the scoring at 5โ€“2.

It was an outstanding second-half performance, built on resilience, experience, and composure after adversity. Having now beaten both teams they were battling with at the top, Bristol Athletic sit top of the league on goal difference, a testament to the squadโ€™s mentality and togetherness.

Man of the Match went to Captain Shah Bhakerd, whose ball control, movement, and clinical finishing set the tone. Credit also goes to the leadership from Kanwar Singh and Kieran Miller, whose intervention after going 2โ€“1 down ensured the team reset and finished the job in style.
A huge win. Another statement made.
